Do you know Men also get Breast Cancer?

It was a rude awakening to learn that men also get breast cancer in the story of Peter Criss, founding member of rock band KISS. Criss discovered a lump in his left nipple in December 2007.

Criss, 63, underwent a lumpectomy in February 2008 followed by mastectomy tn March under the care of Dr. Alex Swistel,  who is the director of the Weill Cornell Breast Center in New York.
He said he often felt odd as the only man in the waiting room.

Signs of Male breast Cancer include;
  • Abnormal lumps or swelling in either the breast, nipple, or chest muscle
  • Skin dimpling or puckering
  • Nipple retraction (turning inward)
  • Redness or scaling of the nipple or breast skin
  • Nipple discharge
Though breast cancer is men is far less common than in women, it is very possible for men to develop breast cancer which is equally as life threatening as breast cancer in women.

According to the -The American Cancer Society they have been about 2,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer diagnosed in men each year and approximately 450 men die from breast cancer annually.
